LCOY Gambia 2024 Through the Eyes of Dawda Manneh: A Youth-Led Climate Revolution

This year, we connected our members with various LCOYs (Local Conferences of Youth) in their countries, as we continue working towards a youth-inclusive voice at @COP29 in Azerbaijan. Hear from Dawda Manneh, a member of the Conservation Leaders Network, who attended LCOY Gambia:
“My experience at LCOY Gambia 2024 was incredible, invaluable, encouraging, and inspiring.
I have never attended a climate change conference like this—one where young, passionate, and dedicated professionals, climate leaders, and entrepreneurs from across The Gambia gather with a shared vision for climate action, sustainability, and better policy.
The opening theme, ‘Gambian Youth Leading Climate Revolution: Bridging Policy and Practice,’ delivered a powerful message about why Gambian youth should be at the forefront of shaping climate policies and translating those policies into meaningful action for both the present and future generations.
The highlight of my experience was the mangrove planting. We worked in the Tambi Wetlands, planting thousands of mangroves—a first for me in a wetland environment. This activity not only contributed to ecosystem restoration but also gave us hands-on insight into the work climate leaders and activists do on the ground. It demonstrated the commitment of young people to combat climate change through advocacy, education, and practical efforts.
LCOY Gambia 2024 has truly inspired me as a climate leader. It motivated me to continue advocating for climate action and allowed me to connect with other young professionals and activists from across the country, all doing incredible work in their communities. With the knowledge and skills I gained, I hope to give back by serving on the organizing committee for LCOY Gambia 2025, In Shaa Allah.

Based on my experience, I’d like to suggest a few ideas for improving LCOY Gambia 2025:
1. Skills-building workshops focused on climate advocacy, campaign strategies, policy analysis, and fundraising.
2. Pitching sessions with grant prizes for participants to present their climate solutions and support their projects.
3. More hands-on fieldwork opportunities, allowing participants to put theory into practice.

I believe these suggestions, along with others from participants, can help make LCOY Gambia 2025 even more impactful. It will inspire and empower more young people to take the lead in the fight against climate change.”
We hope to keep empowering and giving our members the opportunity to get their voices heard.
