A reflection from our member Catherine Patrick on her takeaways from the recently ended 2024 United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Catherine says: “ Attending UNEA-6 was a unique experience! Engaging with global leaders, experts, and activists on a platform of shared responsibility for environmental stewardship was truly enlightening.

During her opening remarks, UNEP Executive Director Inger Anderson emphasized the pivotal role of youth in environmental conservation. "The power to change lies with us, members of this Assembly, governments, UNEA, UNEP family, scientists, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, and businesses. We must do things differently," urged Inger Andersen.

The remarks from the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico left an indelible mark, emphasizing the critical role of infrastructure in our future. His call to invest in adaptive solutions and prioritize nature-based alternatives resonated deeply, echoing the importance of intergenerational equity as highlighted in the Global Youth Declaration.

The relaunch of the Young Champions of the Earth initiative showcased daring ideas and environmental innovation, emphasizing the UN's commitment to recognizing and honoring young leaders, a testament to the significance of bold ideas for our collective future.

These and more other sessions collectively emphasized that environmental issues transcend boundaries. The clear call to action is evident: transparency, innovation, wise investments, and youth empowerment.”

Catherine’s participation reflects the importance of youth representation in events as UNEA and how effective the inclusion of youth play in promoting sustainable development of the planet through our engagement and decisions.
